First State Military - Eighty-eight members of the Class of 2021 at First State Military Academy in Clayton received their high school diplomas at the fourth annual graduation ceremony on June 4.

In his speech, FSMA Board Chairman C. Scott Kidner asked graduates to "seek out these opportunities to serve, whether it's for a nonprofit that feeds the hungry, cleans our beaches, or even cares for our turtles."

"It's your responsibility to give back …...all of us who were born and raised in this great country, it's our responsibility to give back," he said.

"Things aren't always as bad as we think," Tackett said. "Keep moving forward and you'll find yourself reaching your goal more often. And don't be afraid to ask for help or be afraid to stand with someone who needs help themselves."

Salutatorian Samara Jacobo said, "This year has not been easy, but as we walk across that stage and receive our diploma, these moments will be a reflection of who we have become with our future in our hands."

After the ceremony, Clayton Police led the students in an off-campus vehicle parade through town.

FSMA, a public charter school that offers the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, is completing its sixth academic year. The school has an enrollment of 458 students from 12 Delaware school districts. First State Military Academy, a public charter high school in Clayton, opened its doors to all new cadets on August 27. While new cadets have extra training during the first week of September, all other students will return to school in the optional hybrid model on September 8.

Currently, cadets are supposed to come to school one day and work from home the rest of the week. All cadets can choose a completely remote option.

Superintendent Patrick Gallucci said the school is ready to make changes. "Obviously we knew going into it that you can't always plan everything, but you can have flexibility [in] your plan so you can adjust it," he said.

For the first few days back, the new cadets were assisted by upperclassmen as they learned the ways of the school, where all students are members of the Marine Corps JROTC program.

All cadets wear masks on buses and at school and only take them off when eating, Gallucci said. Once the cadets get off the bus, they split into groups and stay in that group for the day. This will make it easier for the Department of Public Health to contact the tracker if a cadet becomes ill.

"It's going well," Gallucci said in an Aug. 28 interview. “Today is much smoother than yesterday. He said the adjustment was a challenge, but First State Military Academy leadership was ready to take it on after overcoming the challenges that came with starting a brand new school five years ago.

"Now that we're in this environment and we have to completely change the way we have to do things as a school, it's been tough, but we've done it," he said.

School staff have been discussing possible reopening plans for several weeks since early July. After Gov. John Carney gave the green light to hybrid learning, the board voted to adopt the hybrid plan at its Aug. 11 meeting.

Prior to that decision, Gallucci said staff had to make sure they had enough cleaning supplies to disinfect the building every night. The school bought syringes, wet wipes, disinfectants and plexiglass for the classrooms.

The First State Military Academy has 466 cadets this year, representing areas from all over New Castle County and Kent County.

Gallucci said the scariest part is the unknown. "It's going to be a challenge," he said. "What we have to do is we can't relax and we can't go back to our old ways. We have to be vigilant every day. We have to be ready for all the unknowns."

"Together we are better. The First State Military Academy is a cadet-led program that requires personal responsibility on the part of the individual to ensure the success of all cadets at the school. Our environment rewards honesty, integrity, teamwork and commitment with expectations." of all cadets. to uphold our mission and purpose, to develop respect for ourselves, for those we depend on and for those who depend on them. We will need to refine these principles in our current environment as we open in a hybrid model to overcome the challenges of implementing our plan during this school year. Personal responsibility to stop the spread of covid-19 during the session. We need your help to ensure that our cadets reduce their exposure by reinforcing mask wearing, frequent hand washing and adherence to six-foot social distancing protocols. These steps are essential for all of us to stop the spread of the virus. We all need to be proactive to reduce the risk of transmission. We greatly appreciate your support."
